Organized December 7, 1883 by General Superintendent E. P. Hart, the California Conference consisted of seven preaching points, six preachers and seventy six members.  The ministry grew to where a separate conference was needed in the southern part of the state.  In 1891, under the direction of the Rev. B. T. Roberts, the Southern California Conference was organized giving the state two Free Methodist conferences.

The California Conference in the north part of the state was renamed the Sierra Pacific Conference and has twenty six churches, thirty seven pastors and 1,743 members.  On average, 2,250 people worship in its churches each Sunday.  It borders Utah on the East, Oregon on the North, the Pacific Ocean on the West, and the Breckenridge and Pinos Mountains in the South.
